Qualifying Format
TWO SESSION
Two one-hour timed sessions (Friday + Saturday). Each driver limited to 12 laps per session. Fastest lap from either session set the grid. Pre-qualifying existed 1977-1992 for overflow entries.

DFV & Ground Effect Era
This era spans two distinct technological phases unified by the dramatic innovations that defined them. The Cosworth DFV V8 engine, introduced in 1967, would go on to win 155 Grand Prix victories and dominate F1 for over a decade. Designed by Keith Duckworth for Ford, the DFV was an integrated engine-and-stressed-member design that could be bolted directly to the chassis, making it affordable for small privateer teams. This democratization of engine supply transformed F1's competitive landscape.
The late 1960s and early 1970s saw aerofoil wings appear on F1 cars, sometimes at absurd heights with minimal structural support — until accidents led to regulations limiting wing dimensions. Safety became a pressing concern: the deaths of Jim Clark (1968), Jochen Rindt (1970, the only posthumous champion), and François Cevert (1973) shook the sport. The 1973 season introduced crushable fuel tank structures, and the 1975 Spanish GP tragedy (4 deaths from Stommelen's crash) accelerated safety improvements.
The ground effect revolution began with Lotus in 1977. The Lotus 78 and 79 used shaped underbody tunnels to create enormous aerodynamic downforce, fundamentally changing car design. By 1980, nearly every team had adopted ground effect technology. The technology was banned after 1982 with flat-bottom mandates for 1983.
Renault introduced turbocharged engines in 1977, beginning a technological arms race. The FISA-FOCA political war of the early 1980s — between the governing body and the team constructors' association — threatened to split the sport. The Concorde Agreement of 1981 established the commercial framework that governs F1 to this day.
